Decorative Concrete That Still Has to Survive Winter
Stamped concrete gives you the look of flagstone, brick, slate or wood plank at a lower cost than laying individual pavers, with no joints for weeds to grow through. We pour stamped concrete patios, walkways, front stoops and driveway borders in Decatur and the towns around it. Underneath the pattern, it is still a concrete slab, and it needs the same base, joints and curing as any other.
How stamping works
The slab is poured and leveled like plain concrete. Color is added either through the whole mix or as a color hardener broadcast on the surface. A release agent goes on, often in a second contrasting color, so the stamps do not stick and the low spots pick up an antiqued look. While the concrete is still workable, the crew sets rubber stamping mats across the slab in sequence and presses the pattern in. Timing is everything: stamp too early and the pattern slumps, too late and it will not take. After curing, the release is washed off and the surface is sealed.
Popular patterns
- Ashlar slate: squared stones in a random layout, the pattern most people pick
- Random stone and flagstone: irregular pieces for a more natural look
- Running bond and herringbone brick: often used for borders or front walks
- Wood plank: the look of a deck with no boards to rot
- Seamless texture: stone texture with no visible grout lines
We bring pattern and color samples to the estimate so you can see them against your house.
Why sealing matters more here
A stamped surface has more texture than a broom finish, and its color lives in the top layer, so it depends on sealer more in Illinois than it would in a warm state. Decatur gets about 40 inches of precipitation in an average year and plenty of freeze-thaw swings. Sealer keeps water and salt out; without it the color fades and the surface can flake. Expect to reseal every two to three years. Keep rock salt off it, and never use a de-icer containing ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate.
Sealed stamped concrete gets slick when wet. On walks, steps and pool surrounds we can mix a fine grit into the sealer for better footing.
Good places for a pattern
Backyard patios come first. Front walks and stoops come next, since every visitor sees them. Some owners stamp only a band along a plain driveway, or just the apron and walk, which dresses up the front of the house for much less than a fully stamped drive. A whole stamped driveway can be done, but it takes the most salt and tire wear and needs the most upkeep.
What drives the price
Complex patterns, multiple colors, borders and lots of curves take more labor on pour day, so they cost more than a single pattern in one color. Tight backyard access, tear-out of an old slab and steps or curved edges also add cost. We price a few options so you can see the difference.
How to spot a good stamped job
Look for a pattern that runs consistently with no smeared areas, control joints hidden in the pattern lines where possible, even color, and a clean edge. Ask any contractor how they color the concrete, what release they use, what sealer goes on and when it should be redone.

How Stamped Concrete Gets Done
1. Choose pattern and color
We show pattern and color options and plan joint locations to fall in the pattern lines.
2. Prepare and pour
Base, forms and reinforcement go in as for any slab, then colored air-entrained concrete is placed.
3. Release and stamp
Release goes on, and the mats are pressed in while the concrete is still workable.
4. Clean and seal
Once cured, the release is rinsed off, joints are cut and sealer is applied.

Stamped Concrete Questions
Does stamped concrete crack?
It can, like any concrete. We place control joints along pattern lines where possible so cracks follow them and are hard to see.
How often does stamped concrete need sealing?
Plan on every two to three years in Central Illinois, sooner on driveways and walks that see salt and heavy traffic.
Is stamped concrete slippery?
When wet, sealed stamped concrete can be slippery. Fine grit mixed into the sealer helps on walks, steps and around pools.
Is stamped concrete cheaper than pavers?
It generally costs less to install than individual pavers, but it needs resealing. Pavers can be pulled and reset one at a time; stamped concrete is repaired as a slab.
