Concrete Work in a Village With Mining Roots

Moweaqua straddles Shelby and Christian counties south of Decatur, and it is one of the older communities we serve as concrete contractors. A coal mine operated here from 1891 to 1935, and the village grew around it. Moweaqua reached 1,478 people in 1900 and 1,591 by 1920. The 2020 census counted 1,764. With a population that has held between about 1,370 and 1,920 for more than a century, many of Moweaqua's homes are old, and the concrete around them has been through a lot of winters.

Remembering 1932

On December 24, 1932, a methane explosion in the Moweaqua mine killed fifty-four miners, the entire day shift. The disaster helped push mine safety laws forward. The Moweaqua Coal Mine Museum opened in 1986 to tell that story. It is a reminder that this village was built by working families, and many homes still reflect that: modest houses, detached garages, long walks and backyard sheds.

What older Moweaqua homes need

With 817 housing units in 2020 and a 3.1% homeowner vacancy rate, most homes here are lived in and cared for. The concrete projects follow:

  • Concrete Driveways: long, narrow drives to a garage in back, replaced on a fresh base
  • Garage & Shed Slabs: worn garage floors and new pads for storage buildings
  • Sidewalks & Steps: front stoops and side walks rebuilt with even risers
  • Concrete Repair & Replacement: single broken sections cut and repoured

Patios that fit the house

Moweaqua backyards often have room to spare. A broom-finish Concrete Patio gives a level place for outdoor meals. Stamped Concrete in a brick or flagstone pattern can suit an older home well. Every patio we pour slopes away from the house and gets control joints so cracks form where we plan them. Stamped work gets a sealer, to be renewed every few years.

A rural village with rural needs

All of Moweaqua's residents lived in areas the census classed as rural in 2020. Farm ground surrounds the village, and many owners want a slab for a pole barn, workshop or equipment shed. Those slabs need to carry real weight. We size thickness and reinforcement to the heaviest thing that will sit on the floor, thicken the edges under walls, and pour on a compacted stone base.

Ground and drainage

Moweaqua sits at 633 feet, a little lower than Decatur, on flat prairie. Flat ground drains slowly, and water that sits next to a slab soaks into the base. Before we pour, we look at the slope of the yard and where downspouts end. A new slab should carry water away from the house, and sometimes the yard needs regrading at the same time.

Long driveways to back garages

Many older Moweaqua homes have the garage at the back of the lot. A long, narrow drive like that cracks in more places than a short one. We space control joints evenly along the length, keep the slab at a consistent thickness from street to garage, and pitch it slightly to one side so rain runs off into the lawn instead of down the middle.

Sealing what you already have

If your Moweaqua driveway or patio is still level and only lightly cracked, a penetrating sealer can slow the damage. We clean the slab, rout and fill the cracks, and apply the sealer. It is not a cure for a broken slab, but on sound concrete it buys time.

Two counties, one village

Moweaqua lies in both Shelby and Christian counties, so the county line can run close to home. Before any work that touches the public sidewalk or street, we check with the village, and for larger outbuildings we confirm which county your address falls in. New concrete here gets the same air-entrained mix and first-winter care as anywhere else. Call (217) 301-2983 to set up an estimate.

Moweaqua Questions

Can you pour a pole barn slab outside Moweaqua?

Yes. We size the slab for the equipment that will sit on it, thicken the edges under the walls and pour on a compacted stone base.

My old garage floor is cracked and uneven. Repair or replace?

If the cracks are narrow and the floor is level, repair and sealing can work. If sections have sunk or broken apart, a new floor is the better choice.

Do you work in both the Shelby and Christian County parts of Moweaqua?

Yes. We serve the whole village and nearby farm ground.
