Sullivan: County Seat, Lake Country
Sullivan is the seat of Moultrie County and the farthest town to the southeast that we serve as concrete contractors. It was founded in 1845 as Asa's Point and named after Sullivan's Island in South Carolina. The city grew steadily for more than a century, from 528 residents in 1860 to 2,399 in 1900 and 4,526 in 1980. The 2020 census counted 4,413. Sullivan has homes from every one of those eras, which makes for a wide variety of concrete work.
Close to the lake
Asa Creek crosses Sullivan's east side and flows south to the Kaskaskia River in Lake Shelbyville. Being close to lake country shows up in driveways and backyards here. Boats, campers and trailers need a place to park. A pad for a boat or camper needs more than a patio slab. We pour these thicker, with reinforcement and a broom finish, on a compacted stone base that will not rut under a loaded trailer. If the pad sits beside your driveway, we join them so the two slabs move without cracking.
The town around the square
Illinois Routes 32 and 121 cross in Sullivan's center, and the Little Theatre on the Square sits there. Older homes near the center usually have:
- Narrow driveways to a detached garage
- Public walks out front and steps up to a porch
- Patios that are small, cracked or missing
We handle each with Concrete Driveways, Sidewalks & Steps and Concrete Patios, and we check with the City of Sullivan before any work in the public sidewalk or at the street.
Stamped concrete and outdoor living
Many Sullivan owners want a backyard that matches a lake-town lifestyle. Stamped Concrete adds a slate, flagstone or wood-plank pattern and color. Around a pool or hot tub, we add grit to the sealer for traction. Stamped surfaces need resealing every few years, and they should be kept free of rock salt. For a simpler look, a broom-finish patio with a stamped border gives some style for less work on pour day.
Housing that stays occupied
The 2020 census counted 2,042 housing units in Sullivan and 1,873 households, with a 2.9% homeowner vacancy rate. Owners here tend to invest in the homes they have. Besides new work, Concrete Repair & Replacement fits many of these homes: a garage apron that sank, a cracked section by a downspout, a step that rocks. Cutting out the bad piece and pouring a new one is often the smartest spend.
Garages and shops
On larger lots at the edges of town, owners add detached garages and workshops. Garage & Shed Slabs are poured with thickened edges under walls, reinforcement and a smooth finish inside. For a shop that will hold heavy equipment, we pour thicker. We work from your building plan so anchor bolts and door openings land in the right spots.
Planning around summer crowds
Summer is prime concrete season in Sullivan, and also the hottest stretch of the year. If you are planning a patio or pad, we schedule pours early in the day during hot weather, keep the concrete cool and start curing quickly so the surface does not dry too fast. Fall pours are another good option.
Holding steady
Sullivan counted 4,526 residents in 1980 and 4,413 in 2020, close to flat over forty years, with 8.3% of its 2,042 housing units vacant in 2020. A stable town like this keeps its older homes in use, and many of them have driveways, walks and patios that have been through several decades of winters. Sorting what can be repaired from what needs replacing is often the first conversation.
