About Decatur Concrete Contractors
Decatur Concrete Contractors is a residential flatwork outfit for Decatur and the Macon County towns around it. We pour driveways, patios, stamped concrete, sidewalks and steps, and garage and shed slabs, and we fix or replace concrete that has cracked, dropped or begun to scale.
Two facts about Decatur concrete
The houses are old. Point2Homes, summarizing Census survey data, gives 1960 as the median build year for Decatur homes, and 22.8 percent were built in 1939 or earlier. Plenty of the slabs beside those houses are original or a second pour, often sitting on bare soil.
The weather is wet as well as cold. Wikipedia's climate table for the city shows about 40 inches of precipitation a year, so outdoor slabs are often damp when a freeze arrives. Snow totals are light, around 13.6 inches, but water in a slab does not need snow to freeze.
From your call to a cured slab
1. Site visit. Measurements, a look at slope and runoff, how a ready-mix truck will reach the work, and how the old slab failed. 2. Paper estimate. Demolition, base, thickness, steel, finish and sealer are priced separately, with a total at the bottom. 3. Rules and locates. We find out whether the City of Decatur or your village wants a permit for the work, and utility lines are marked before digging starts. 4. Pour and cure. Forms are checked for pitch, the concrete is placed and finished, joints are cut, and the slab is kept from drying too fast. 5. Handover. You get dates for walking, driving and sealing before we leave.
Shortcuts we skip
Pouring on mud to stay on schedule, leaving out joints, and letting a fresh slab bake in July or freeze in November all save a little time and cost a lot later. Sunken, cracked walks on Decatur's older blocks show what those shortcuts do.
